Stilson History, Gen 3, part 12, Moses and Mary Stilson

Death eludes many of us, most can put it behind them and move on.  Some though remember through the ages.

In part 11 moses and mary had met, and married, moved into a home in Newtown, CT.

Now that they have settled in, family moved out, died, or just not around.  They have tried to start their little family.  Though wars and rumors of war is all around them.

Marys mother had passed away leaving again land to all the children, though this time, the girls did not quit the land to their brothers, but kept what was to be theirs.
Everyone morned the passing of the great woman who raised 9 children by herself, and leaving them a heritage of what a woman was capable of doing.   Though the family was there for the funeral, there was alot of talk.  Love between the brothers and sisters, was like a blossoming life.  As they each went to their homes after, takeing what their mother left them, in her life.  All were sad for days to come, but the war was something that occupied alot of their minds.

To add a little history, this is the mathew curtis home, which today stands as a museum.  Many homes in the area looked similar, back then, even the home of Moses and Mary Stilson looked similar to this homes outside structure.  The home was 2 stories, with a basement, and upstairs loft.  Mostly things not used anymore was stored in the loft, and the basement was used to store food products keeping them cooler than in any of the other rooms.
Here we find that mary is now pregnate with her 1st child.

Proudly she thinks of her mother, and how she was raised, wondering if the same will be for her children.  If they might learn as she did from her own mother.

Moses on the other hand, was worried.  There was soilders heading to their town, some already haveing passed through.  Some still comeing, it was like the war was here, and not out and away from them.  Rushing around town, he tried to find out if this was something that would pass or something that was going to be here awhile.  He tried hard to not think on this, but it was niegh onto impossible.

With all the comeings and goings around town, it was inevitable that theft would happen.  Others were robbed, and now they were.

Moses though not takeing to this lightly, fought the burgler, then hauled his butt off to the jail house, that was at the back of the community center.  He felt that if nothing else it would show that this was not to be tollerated in their town.
"moses," the officer says.  "We know this is happening, but we can't have citizens takeing the law into their own hands"  Moses replys, "If we don't what would the country be like, you certainly was not at my home to stop this from happening, you certainly was not ready to take the responsibility of what these scum do to our homes, lands and even our town."  Officer, "well we are a bit busy with all the activity in town, the war is not far from our own doorstep."
Sadly moses turns away, saying, "I will protect my own."  He and his wife, now heading back to bed, the scare of the burgler now gone, but the fear that others might return.

It was this same night that Mary went into labor with their first child.  Moses had headed back out into the dark to get help with the delivery.  Mary had turned the covers back, but was unsure if she should lay or stand.  Though before Moses could return, their son was born.

Meet Moses III, named after his father and grandfather.  Moses the 3rd is born, April 16, 1732.
With his blond hair and blue eyes, looking nothing like father or mother, must have taken after a grandparent.

Time went along, Moses trying hard to do what was the natural thing to do, went fishing.

That day was beautiful, reminding him of why he loved the town he lived in, why he married, and why the place was so beautiful.  Coming home with a great catch for the day, and pleased with his outing.

He saw a deer just as he came up on the property.  Standing their gazeing at it wishing he had his rifle with him, for a little venisun would be wonderful on the table.
He kept walking after the pause, and found his wife painting when he got to the house.  She loved to paint the scenes around the area.

He shouts out, "Mary", guess what i saw?"  She was obsorbed in the painting, and only heard part of it.  Moses continues into the house saying, "Caught a bunch of fish this morning, guess it will be fish for supper, rather than that deer I saw".  Mary yells back, "Deer would have been nicer, but fish will do.  I have fresh vegies from the garden as well."
Moses smiles as he thinks of Mary's cooking, how different it was from his mothers, and seem'd so much tastier.
Time had passed when mary gave birth to their 2nd child, a daughter: Annah born July 26, 1736.  Her labor being much easier this time, and her fears not like they had been with Moses.  But the war was closer, she worried more now, The children were growing and she was prenate with her 3rd, when she learned other children were dying from the Pox.  She feared deeply, telling Moses, about her fears.  he too was worried.

Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, was the general that marched across conneticut with his men, camping in Newtown.  On his way to the seige of yorktown.
The battalion entered Newtown, settled down for a bit.  Bringing with them the pox.  Though it ws not for sure this is where the small pox came from, many in the town, did die of Pox during this  time.  Including the two children of Moses and Mary.

Moses III at the age of 4 died Dec. 4, 1736
            and

Annah, at the age of 3, died December 7, 1736.  The two children dying within a couple days of each other.  The Small Pox was running rampant thru the towns at that time.  So its my belief that the two died of small pox, leaving Moses and Mary davistated, and worried about the 3rd child she now carried.

We leave you hear with the horrors of war, and small pox in america.  Children dying, along with elders, and others.  To come again to see how the lives of Moses and Mary Stilson (3rd generation) continues.  Do they have more children? How many? do they live or is there more deaths?

Thanks for reading and leave a message on your thoughts, feelings, and even how to improve the story.  Thanks again for reading.

  1. Oh, how sad that Moses III and Annah died at such a young age! Small pox is a scary outbreak, and especially in those times when vaccines were limited/non-existent, I can only imagine how many family members were lost because of it.

I really hope her third child will be okay. How devasting would it be if she lost that one too?? I also like the fact that Mary took after her mother's strength. Anyone that can raise 9 children on their own deserves admiration and respect.

I also notice that you're using quotations now! Great job! It really helps to distinguish between the narration and dialogue.

    1. Yes i am starting to remember my english classes. Still can't spell worth a toot. LOL. I did alot of research for that time, to find out why 2 children might have died within a few months of each other in same year. Small pox seem'd to be the biggest problem. I think with her mom haveing raised 9 by herself, that the girl got some kind of strength from her. So incorporated both.
I think it will, but its still mysterious. From what i fround out small pox vacinations were just comeing out in england around that time, and about a year later some were imported to the americas. So there was nothing. Small pox is the same desease that hit the indian reservations as well. Well population not reservations. Killing many indian families.

thanks on noticing my way to distinguise from narration and dialogue. I wanted to have the family show some form of speaking with each other, yet tell their story in the only way i knew how. Its still not an easy story to write, not enough facts. Though research was done to the first vincent in 1635. Research is still going on, and hopefully more or better info comes out with it. paper work was not easy to do then, and alot of buildings did burn down.
Great to hear you loved it again, and keep reading. I know history is sometimes extreemly boreing, but i was hopeing to add some to help make the story seem so much more real.
