Stilson: Moses and Charity Part 8

Though time seem'd to fly, yet time also seem'd to stand still.

The family had moved after selling dads farm, to a place that would accomadate, a new couple.  Mom had moved and remarried to a Mr. Couch, his sisters and brothers spred out not only in the town, but to new opened up areas.

His brother haveing died, weighed on Moses mind, with a up and growing family he worried, both day and night.  The Indian raids, the killings, were it seem'd getting worse.
As little Susanna, became a toddler, Charity also found herself pregnate with a 2nd child.  She worried also, but Moses was there alot, he made her feel safe.

Though Moses may have been there his rifle ready, the farm secure'd the best he could.  He still had horrible dreams of the reaper comeing.  For just recently their old horse had died.  He knew it would happen, as he brushed him one day, he realized, that the old horse of his fathers was getting old.

He could see the gray, he knew it would soon be time they would be burying the old Stallion.  He knew he should look for another to replace him, but just could not bring himself to do so yet.

The talk around town, was of the indians, that watches, lurking in the darkness, or hidden on top of hills to over watch the settlements.  He worried deeply for his family, especially since his brothers family was taken by a raid.

He took Mary to a neighbors one eveing, where they let their worries fly off into the darkness, surrounding the dancing, and joy makeing, the talking with others.  It was a pleasure to let the worries, just fly off.  The spent that day and night at the party, enjoying themselves, and talking with the neighbors.  It was here that Moses learned of a new town, well not so new, but the town, was makeing strides, it was getting heavy in mills, and places of work, even a school there for more higher education had started.

When the next day came, it was nice to see the wild animals bound across the property, it was a warm and sunny day, with a bit of joy in the air.

A few years had passed, but nothing major had happened. Charity started showing with her 2nd child.  Moses freted, he worried, nearly turning himself gray.  But he managed, to keep food in the pantry, the farm running smoothly, and he loved to tinker.  He had made a few interesting toys, and even something to help with the harvest though it was not fancy, he was pleased.  Neighbors told him he should move, to New Haven, where he could get more education in the area, he so much loved.  He considered it, but was not sure the time was yet right to make such a huge move.

1675 - 1677 King Philip's War so named after Metacomet of the Wampanoag tribe, who was called Philip by the English. The war was bloody and bitterly fought by the colonists against the Wampanoags, Narragansetts, Nipmucks, Pocumtucks, and Abenakis. During King Philip's War, up to one third of America's white population was wiped out. This war proved to be the final struggle by the Native Americans of Connecticut.
With knowing this, moses continued to have the nightmares of the grim reaper visiting them.  Finally getting up the nerve he talks with Charity.
He tells her of the raids, of his brothers family.  He talks of New haven.  She listens, and with comforting words, explains, that though shes pregnate its not a good time to travel.

The days went by turning into months, it was then that he realized the old horse was going, as he runs to him, to try and comfort the passing.

He is sure hes imagining the dark figure, standing there.  As he comforts the horse.

though as he steps back hes unsure anymore.  Is that dark figure hugging Whipper.  Now he thinks he has gone mad, though hes sure its just a dream, a fleeting one at that.

But as he stood there, he was sure he saw that dark figure, not only hug whipper, but climb upon his back and ride away with him.  Moses is like what in the world? Why am i seeing things not there?  Why why why?
He turns back to the house, haveing buryied the old horse, near other plots upon the land.  he decides to not mention the dark figure, he swore he saw take to the old horse.

Thankfully that winter so far was not harsh, when Charity went into labor with their 2nd child.
Moses threw up his hands, with both worry and wonder, as he helped his wife, have their 2nd child.

Upon holding his son, well his wife rested, he looked upon his face.  Wondering what the future might hold for this little lad.  Moses Jr. born: dec. 25, 1705.  Would be known in our family tree as the next heir.
Years flew by, and of course he became a toddler, he was baptized May 16, 1708  Well Charity was yet expecting another child.
Moses took time, to go to check out this New Haven.  he was gone for a few weeks nearly a month.
But his travel was without any problems.  He checked out homes for sale, lands for sale, the schools, the mills, and the people.  He was pleased with what he saw.

Upon returning home, he realized that the strange lady standing on his property, had been the one following him.  He approached her, to ask what her problem was.  She talked with crazyness.  So he made her leave, going inside to his family.  Telling Charity of the town, and the area.  She was pleased that it would give their family much to look forward to.  But telling him it must wait at least another year, for she was pregnate with a 3rd baby.

Soon enough it was seen that Susanna was no longer the little toddler, he taught to talk, but a child ready for schooling, ready to help around the home.  It was a saturday, and sunday was church, so Moses takes the family to the park.

It was at the park he let the dreaded dreams go.  He played hop scotch with his daughter, watched his wife with the baby, and the dog run crazzily around.
Even watched his daughter:

Catch a butterfly.  It was wonderful, warm and sunny.  He was at peace with his family, his life, and his choices.  They would make the move to New Haven when the baby was born.  He had found a buyer for the farm, and with that money on the day of their arrival at new haven would purchase a home, near town.

For now we leave you, with the happenings of the family.  Come again, leave your comments, enjoy the story.

  1. I agree, this chapter had more family depth than the previous ones. Even though it was sad to see the horse die, it was nice to see good things happen to the family instead of more death.

I'm glad Moses decided to cast his fears aside to enjoy spending time with his family, especially now that Susanna is older. It's amazing how the simplest things like catching butterflies can make children happy. lol Moses Jr. is adorable!
