When last we left you, it was at the end of an era. Moses father died after his marriage, but Moses left home long before. He decided to move to New Town, 6 miles down the road. He heard they could use good farmers, and needed some help in other areas.
Moses was quite the looker, in his time. Not shy at all, but he did manage to stay pure, as he had met a young woman in Youngtown, CT. Where he was heading. Her father was a farmer, and owned over 100 acres of land. Though this was not his reasons for going, he was going to ask permision to marry his daughter.
as he rode through the woodlands, down the paths toward his destination, he realized just how beautiful the americas were. He wondered about his life, how things might go, about the girl he was going to ask to marry. He worried about his father, who seem'd to be doing well, but there were times he just was not right.
As he entered Newtown, first thing he noticed was the new meeting house. It was used for town meetings and on sundays for church meetings.
Though he had been here before it astonished him, to see the small town, as it had grown since he and his dad had last been there. Though he knew exactly where he would live, or so he thought.
Mary Beers the apple of his eye. Born July 9, 1708. She was born in milford, though her parents had came from boston.
Her father died at a fairly young age of 45, leaving her mother to take care of 9 children. When the girls were of age, they gave the land their father gave them to their brothers. quiting it. But then when her mother died, there was no more giving up of lands. She had inherited about 5 acres maybe a bit more. her father had owned, 100 acres of land all total, near the west side of the stratford rivers. He raised oxen, cows, horses, swine and sheep. Homes here were mostly on the farms though there were some in town, of course, the mills, and taverns, the grocer, and traders. Mostly they lived near the center of town.
Finally arriving at his destination:
The house once belonged to Mary's family was not to be his and hers. A well built 2 story plain home, like most in the area.
Though after his arriveal, his takeing of the property, he had to head back, for his graduation. Mary and her mother joined him.
He was amply happy and content with this, it was only a few hours by buggy. Though after words he decided to take Mary out ..
First thing he did was give her the flowers he had picked. She was thrilled. They then headed off to the park where they spent most of the day, watching the birds, picnicing and just over all enjoyig each others time together.
There was a gorgous fountain in the park, one of his favorite places to go. Mary too enjoyed it. As they talked and spoke even kissed a couple times, he decides to pop the question.
Mary so taken back by surprise, leaps for joy. Saying "yes she would be his wife". Happy as he was the rode back to the home. He planning their wedding at that same park. Sending out the letters of invite to his parents and some cousins, other friends, that might want to be there.
Time had passed, he was antsy, wanting only to be the husband of Mary.
Finally the day comes.
As everyone gathered for the wedding, his mom and sis to the right, her mom and his dad to the left, others selecting sides or spots to watch from. Tears of joy and smug smiles, were seen amongst the guests.
He notices his dad and her mom, both seem to be quite pleased. and on the other side:
He saw his mom wipe a tear, and his sister cry great heaving sobs, of course he could not tell if it was because of the wedding or because she recently lost her cat. Either way, many were there. The cake haveing been delivered stood not far off, he thought it looked simply beautiful.
Finally they exchange their vows, and rings. He was excited, scared, and in love. This beauty he would now call his wife.
Soon its time to cut the cake, bringing them all closer, to have a bite of the beauty that sat on the table. The baker had did a superb job, as he looked over at his wife, thinking I also did a great job.
Ahh he sighs, the party is over, and i get alone time with my new wife. Meet Mr. Moses Jr. and Mrs Mary (Beers) Stilson. This is the story of their life. Please come back to read more.
This was short, but an intro to the 3rd generation life, of Stilson History.
"Her father died at a fairly young age of 45, leaving her mother to take care of 9 children."
ReplyDeleteWow, a widow with 9 kids?? That's quite a task. But Mary seems to be well-adjusted and it helps that she inherited the house along with some land.
The wedding was beautiful! I'm sure they're looking forward to their honeymoon. :-)
ya, can u believe that one. 9 kids raised alone. wow i thought the same thing. I am going to guess, that she probably cleaned houses for others to get a bit of xtra. But of course don't know that for sure. She died not long after the kids were married off, or on their own, who knows.
ReplyDeleteI tried to make the wedding unique, since it was like a small town, and no churches so to speak, the meeting house, was used for government issues, and sundays for non demensional church meetings. Though i do belive that most were puritans.
There are some huge baby surprises in next one.
