Stilson Family History the beginning.

I would like to start this with a bit of history.  Vincent Stilson is first noted in Essex county, Mass., records at Marblehead between 1668 and 1674.  He was noted to be in Milford, Conn. in 1646.  He is called one of the "Principal after Planters" of Milford from 1646 to 1660.  Its thought that he may have come from over with the John Davenport group.

A Puritan minister named John Davenport led his flock from exile in the Netherlands back to England and finally to America in the spring of 1637. The group arrived in Boston on the ship Hector on June 26, but decided to strike out on their own, based on their impression that the Massachusetts Bay Colony was lax in its religious observances.

There is little to no information on WHO came with John Davenport.  But they were puritans, and it seems they were the founders and starters of Milford, CT.  Which it seems is where Vincent was first known to be.

It will not be easy to create a life of a family, with little information of the whys and hows, the wheres and whens.  But Here is my attempt at creating a family history.
Vincent Stilson arriving somewhere around the year of 1646 in Milford, CT.  He worked for what was to become his own land.  Haveing settled his account he married a young woman.

Grace, her last name unknown.  Became Vincents wife.  She was born around 1639 and most likely he married her around 1655 or 1656. It seems he travled quite a bit, though his farm life also took up much of his time.

Well alot was happening in those days, from indian raids, to starveing, to new comers to a new world.

An uneasy competition ruled their relations with the Connecticut River settlements centered on Hartford. The colony published a complete legal code in 1656, but the law remained very much church-centered. A major difference between the New Haven and Connecticut colonies was that the Connecticut permitted other churches to operate on the basis of "sober dissent" while the New Haven Colony only permitted the Puritan church to exist.
When a royal charter was issued to Connecticut in 1662, New Haven's period as a separate colony ended and its towns were merged into the government of Connecticut Colony in 1665.
Many factors were to contribute to the loss of power including the loss of its strongest governor Eaton, the economic disasters of losing its only ocean-going ship and the Philadelphia disaster. Also there was the regicide case. The New Haven Colony harbored several of the regicide judges who sentenced King Charles I to death. The New Haven Colony was absorbed by the Connecticut Colony partly as royal punishment by King Charles II for harboring the regicide judges who sentenced King Charles I. At the same time the Connecticut Colony had seen its star rise.

though these were just a bit of the things that occured during the time of Vincent and Graces life.  They had 4 children.

They were born in the order of 1. Vincent jr., 2. James, 3 Agnus, 4 Mary.  Though my game decided to have a glitchy time.  and agnus is born first in the sims.  Though the rest are in the correct order.

Vincent started his homestead with his wife Grace.  It was small and was able to feed them and their animals.  Which they had a cow for milk, chickens for eggs and meat, and horses to haul what they might need as well as work the farm with.

The inside of their small Cabin was not alot, it had an stove for heat and cooking, a bed to sleep in and a couch to sit upon.  Most all things were made by hand and by Vincent.  Though there were times when he could trade for some things they could use in the home or on the farm.

It wasn't long before Grace found she was expecting .  They worked hard, they had plenty, they counted themselves among the lucky of those here.  Vincent worked at the church, and even with the indians.  When it was first noted that a tradeing post would go up just for that purpose.

It was not long before Agnus was born and then a toddler.  Grace loved working around the home and takeing care of little Grace, she even took her on walks and helped her to learn many things in her young life. Though in the mean time you could find Vincent off doing chores, or sell and tradeing.

one such time he was at a neighbors delivering fruits and vegitables.  They had an abundance that year, he learned the man had a colt to sell .  So Vincent gets the young horse, takeing it home and trains it for the many uses it would have on their farm.  This was a fine working horse, and would do well.

There was alot to do, and the trees were tremendous, Wood was gathered not only for cooking and heat, but also for building.  The farm needed an addition to the house, it need a barn, and a fence to keep in livestock.

We leave you here with the startings of the stilson heritage. A farm, a wife, and a child with another on the way.

  1. Great start! I really like the way you started with the background history of Vincent Stilson and where he came from, as well as why he left Europe. I'm enjoying this story so far, I really like the historic aspect of it. I can imagine what life was like back then when Vincent and Grace had to start from scratch.
